What does "engage in mock-hostile banter" mean in the etymology explanation of signify?

It means that you say insulting things to a friend who knows they are not really insulting. "Banter" means to talk back and forth, "hostile" means angry or mean, and "mock" means fake, not real. So for example, you say something joking to your friend and he say some joking insult back at you.
